Act smart, look dumb. Marcus Aurelius 5.5

Marcus admonishes himself to avoid open demonstrations of intelligence, to use wit as required without being caught in the snare of others' approval or admiration. This means occasionally playing the fool, a role that ironically requires quite a bit of wit!

They do not have to admire your wit. Show it when needs must, but let there be many matters about which you have nothing to say. You were not born and raised for display. Instead of showing off, be sure to apply the virtues that are entirely yours: honesty, honor, patience, indifference to pleasure, good cheer, thrift, grace, freedom, and a magnificence that will not stoop to wrangle or babble. Now you see clearly, don't you, how many goods you are able to deliver? You see that nature and preparation offer you no excuses when you hang back, unwilling to engage your life's work? Perhaps you prefer a different option. Will you force yourself to grumble and grasp for excuses, flattering and blaming your little body? Boasting and bootlicking, wrecking every endeavor you make by setting your soul against nature? Nay, by the gods! You were strong enough to release yourself from all this nonsense long ago, but only on condition that you condemn yourself to the role of a slow fool. And that role demands a committed actor, who won't sleep on the job!
