Marcus Aurelius advises himself to identify the good life with personal actions and integrity, not the actions or integrity of society too large to be personal.

Πείρασον πῶς σοι χωρεῖ καὶ ὁ τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ ἀνθρώπου βίος τοῦ ἀρεσκομένου μὲν τοῖς ἐκ τῶν ὅλων ἀπονεμομένοις, ἀρκουμένου δὲ τῇ ἰδίᾳ πράξει δικαίᾳ καὶ διαθέσει εὐμενεῖ.

Convince yourself that the good life becomes yours whenever you are content with your allotment from the universe, whenever you are satisfied by just actions, privately undertaken, and your own kindly disposition.
