Beyond Philosophy

What is philosophy? Seneca makes it sound like μῆτις or σωφρσύνη, two different ways of conceiving practical wisdom. One thing is certain: it requires action. Practical negotiation depends upon premises, assumptions that all parties accept. If you find yourself negotiating with someone who demands a decision you cannot make, one tactic is to question whatever premise they use to make that decision logically inescapable. Seneca gives Lucilius the secret to a strong mind: work it over daily. Keep the promises you make to yourself. Stick with your goals to the end; don't always be making new ones. Seneca ends his discussion of health with an admonition to avoid living for future outcomes. We should gratefully enjoy, and share, goods that we have rather than forge splendid plans for future goods that may prove illusory.
